Bioplastics, explained: what they are, where 'compostable' claims fall short, greenwashing risks, and better paths—reduction, reuse, refill, and real zero-waste.
Is bioplastic a false solution? Learn compostability limits, contamination risks, and why reduction, reuse, and refill beat single-use .

Bioplastics: Is Bioplastic another False Solution?

Plastic pollution is a serious problem, and sometimes the solutions presented to us can be just as problematic. This is the case with bioplastics—the supposed eco-friendly alternative that promises to save us from the clutches of traditional plastics. Is it all just a greenwashing scam? Let’s take a closer look at the world of bioplastics and see if they live up to the hype.

Bioplastics are derived from renewable sources like corn starch or cellulose, rather than fossil fuels. Sounds innocuous, right? Well, hold on to your reusable shopping bags, because it is complicated.

First off, not all bioplastics are created equal. Some are chemically identical to their petroleum-based counterparts, with the only difference being where they come from. So, while they may be derived from plants, they can still have similar environmental impacts.

And what about their biodegradability? Well, here’s where things get really tricky. Most bioplastics are not as biodegradable as they’d like us to believe. They often require special processing under specific conditions to break down. So, that “biodegradable” label on your bioplastic cup doesn’t mean it will magically disappear over a couple of weeks or months. It might take years, or even decades, to fully decompose. Meanwhile, wildlife gets poisoned eating it, as do humans.

Repeated studies have found high levels of harmful and persistent chemicals, PFAS, in compostable food packaging

          .

Bioplastics can also perpetuate the single-use plastics conundrum. The convenience and affordability of single-use bioplastic products encourage their overconsumption and inadequate disposal. We’re just swapping one throwaway culture for another. It’s like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube by rearranging the colors—sure, it looks different, but it’s still the same puzzle we’re stuck with.

And let’s not forget about the impact on agriculture. Some bioplastics rely on crops like corn or sugarcane for production. This creates competition for land and resources that are also needed for food production. So, while we’re patting ourselves on the back for using “eco-friendly” bioplastics, we might inadvertently be driving up food prices or affecting the availability of certain crops. Other products like bamboo require chemicals to transform it into serveware. Regardless of the material, all disposable products must enter a supply chain that usually requires fossil fuels for distribution, and more fossil fuels to dispose of it whether at a landfill, at an incinerator or a facility that composts biodegradable plastics.

The real solution is to reduce our overall plastic consumption and embrace reusable and sustainable alternatives. Let’s go back to the good old days of glass bottles and ditch those flimsy plastic bags. It’s time to ask ourselves the tough questions: Do we really need that plastic-wrapped avocado? Can we survive without single-use water bottles? It’s time to rethink our choices and opt for products that truly make a difference. Above all, we need political will to institute regulations that will result in source reduction of single use plastics and embrace a regenerative circular economy.

In the end, bioplastics are not the knight in shining armor many were hoping for, but they can serve as a reminder that true change starts with holding corporations and polluters accountable. Let’s elect leaders who will put people first, reduce the industry’s footprint, and be the change we wish to see in the world.

Summary Report: INC-5 Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations

The fifth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) for the Global Plastics Treaty concluded in Busan, South Korea, marking a pivotal yet deeply disappointing moment in the global fight against plastic pollution. From an Indigenous, frontline, and fenceline environmental justice perspective, these negotiations failed the communities most affected by plastic pollution, perpetuating exclusion, lack of accountability, and disregard for human and Indigenous rights.

          Key Failures of INC-5

          1. Exclusion of Indigenous Peoples:

Despite being among the most impacted by plastic pollution—from extraction to disposal—Indigenous Peoples were systematically excluded from critical decision-making. While Indigenous Knowledge was superficially referenced, the treaty draft ignored the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and omitted mechanisms for Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), reducing Indigenous contributions to tokenism.

          2. Lack of Accountability and Transparency:

The negotiations were criticized for favoring petrochemical lobbyists and petro-states over the voices of rights holders. Key provisions, such as legally binding global targets for plastic reduction and holding polluters accountable under the “Polluter Pays Principle,” were weakened and excluded.
Closed-door negotiations further sidelined community advocates and environmental justice delegations.

          3. Failure to Address Systemic Harm:

The draft treaty failed to address the full life cycle of plastics, including upstream impacts of extraction and the hazardous chemicals in plastic production. The text also allowed for dangerous false solutions, such as chemical recycling, bioplastics, and plastic credits, which perpetuate waste colonialism and systemic inequities.

          4. Neglect of Human Rights and Environmental Justice:

By ignoring the intersecting crises of human health, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss, the treaty exacerbates global inequalities. Its reliance on voluntary measures undermines the principles of environmental justice and fails to protect vulnerable communities suffering disproportionate harm.

          A Note of Optimism

While INC-5 was fraught with failures, one notable outcome offers a glimmer of hope: the negotiations did not conclude with the adoption of a weak treaty. This delay provides an opportunity for global leaders to return to the table with greater ambition and commitment. There is still time to ensure that the treaty addresses the entire life cycle of plastics, from extraction to disposal, and incorporates enforceable provisions on all chemicals of concern. This pause in finalizing the treaty is a critical moment to push for a framework that upholds human rights, respects Indigenous sovereignty, and delivers meaningful solutions.

          Demands for Transformative Action

The International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Plastics (IIPFP) and other environmental justice organizations have called for significant revisions to the treaty to ensure it upholds Indigenous and human rights, recognizes the sovereignty and leadership of frontline communities, and delivers on its promise of justice:

          • Recognition of Indigenous Rights:

The treaty must fully integrate UNDRIP and guarantee Indigenous participation as rights holders in governance structures.

          • Legally Binding Targets:

Robust commitments to phase out plastics, halt fossil fuel extraction, and eliminate toxic chemicals from plastic production are essential for meaningful progress.

          • Rejection of False Solutions:

Solutions must prioritize non-toxic reuse and traditional zero-waste systems rather than perpetuate harmful practices under the guise of circularity.

          • Financial and Technical Support:

A just financial mechanism is needed to provide equitable, grant-based funding directly to impacted communities, ensuring their leadership in implementing solutions.

          Conclusion

INC-5 has failed to deliver the transformative change necessary to address the global plastic crisis. By excluding Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities, the treaty undermines its legitimacy and effectiveness. However, the absence of a finalized treaty offers a critical window for meaningful revisions. Global leaders must urgently prioritize inclusion, accountability, and justice to create a treaty that respects human rights, safeguards the environment, and honors the Knowledge and sovereignty of those most affected by plastic pollution. A weak treaty is not just a missed opportunity—it is a betrayal of the communities and ecosystems fighting for survival. The world is watching, and the responsibility to act boldly and inclusively is more urgent than ever.

The petrochemical industry, facing a decline in fossil fuel use, is now betting on plastics as a means to maintain profits. Through misleading narratives, they push the idea that plastics are safe, and claim that recycling minimizes their environmental impact. However, these assertions are far from the truth. Plastics are not only harming the environment, but they are also having detrimental effects on human health, from the brain to reproductive organs.

          What Are Microplastics?

Microplastics are tiny particles of plastic less than 5 millimeters in size. They are found everywhere—from the deepest parts of the ocean to the food we eat and the air we breathe. While plastics were initially created for their durability, their degradation over time into microplastics is leading to widespread pollution. They originate from a range of sources, including plastic bottles, cosmetic products, clothing fibers, degraded plastic waste, and even car tires. Today, these tiny particles are invading our bodies, where studies have shown they cause a range of health problems.

Microplastics can enter our bodies in several ways, mainly through inhalation or ingestion. They are found in everyday items such as food packaging, cosmetics, and even water bottles. Once inside, microplastics have been detected in human blood, lungs, and even brain tissue. Recently, researchers also discovered microplastics in male reproductive organs, raising concerns about their role in declining fertility rates.

The presence of microplastics in human tissues has led scientists to investigate their health impacts. Studies suggest that microplastics may contribute to inflammation, hormonal disruption, and even infertility. In one study, microplastics were found in the blood of 17 out of 22 healthy adults . Another study found microplastics in the brain tissue of deceased individuals, raising concerns about cognitive and neurological risks. Furthermore, recent research has linked microplastics to reproductive issues in men, finding that microplastics may cause erectile dysfunction by interfering with blood flow and muscle function in the penis.

The petrochemical industry’s push for continued plastic use is a clear example of a False Solution. While they promote recycling and plastic alternatives like “bio plastics,” the reality is that these efforts are insufficient to address the scale of the problem. Recycling rates remain low, and the production and disposal of “bio plastics” is often just as harmful as traditional plastics .

Rather than relying on these false solutions, we must push for Better Solutions that prioritize reducing plastic use altogether. The Planetary Health Check, as referenced by environmental leaders, emphasizes that a “whole Earth” approach is needed. By addressing the root causes of plastic pollution—overproduction and dependency on fossil fuels—we can protect both planetary and human health.

To mitigate the damage caused by microplastics, we need to adopt systemic changes. Reducing plastic consumption is key. This includes choosing alternatives to plastic products, supporting policies that ban harmful plastics, and advocating for stronger environmental regulations. Moreover, innovative research into non-toxic materials and Better Solutions will help reduce our reliance on harmful plastics.

As the science grows clearer, one thing is evident: microplastics pose a serious threat to both environmental and human health. The time to act is now, before these tiny particles cause irreversible damage to our bodies and our planet.

A Gamble on Dirty Hydrogen: The Port of Stockton’s False Solution

The transition to a clean energy future is fraught with difficult decisions, particularly when immediate solutions seem elusive. This complexity is evident in the recent approval of a hydrogen plant at the Port of Stockton, a small inland port in California’s Central Valley (1). On the surface, hydrogen might seem like a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, but a closer examination reveals that not all hydrogen is created equal (2), and this project may represent a step backward rather than forward.

The False Solution: Hydrogen from Methane

The Port of Stockton, under pressure from California regulators to convert its vehicles to zero-emissions models, was at a crossroads. The Port of Stockton has been recognized as a national leader in vehicle electrification, successfully converting approximately 40% of its cargo-handling equipment from diesel to battery-electric models. However, electric alternatives are not yet available for all types of equipment, and those already in use have encountered various issues. For example, sensors have malfunctioned in colder weather or due to moisture, and maintenance requires specialized knowledge of the equipment’s complex computer systems, making repairs more difficult. Rather than investing in better qualified staff the port is considering Hydrogen fuel-cell trucks, which are also zero-emissions at the tailpipe, appeared to be a viable alternative, but Stockton lacked a local hydrogen source.

BayoTech, a company offering to build a hydrogen plant at the port, proposed a solution. The catch? This hydrogen would be produced from methane, the primary component of natural gas, using a process called steam methane reforming (SMR). While hydrogen trucks don’t release carbon emissions, the production process for this type of hydrogen is incredibly carbon-intensive. For every kilogram of hydrogen produced, the plant will emit 18 kilograms of carbon dioxide—a startling figure that far exceeds the Department of Energy’s standard for clean hydrogen (3).

This is where the false solution comes into play. While the hydrogen produced at this plant might help reduce emissions from diesel trucks, the production process itself will still contribute significantly to the region’s already dire pollution levels. Stockton ranks in the 96th percentile for pollution burden in California (4) and the port’s decision to approve a fossil-fueled hydrogen plant will only exacerbate the problem.

          Better Solutions or More Pollution?

The port’s deputy director, Jeff Wingfield, has defended the decision, but environmental groups in Stockton are raising concerns. Stockton already faces severe pollution, and this new plant will add more carbon and other harmful chemicals like nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Local residents, who already suffer from high asthma rates, fear that the plant will worsen the city’s air quality.

Davis Harper, from the organization Restore the Delta, expressed frustration that Stockton—a community already suffering from the impacts of industrial pollution—approved a project that continues to rely on methane rather than transitioning toward truly clean alternatives.

One of the central issues in Stockton’s decision is the state’s hydrogen policy. Governor Gavin Newsom has committed California to developing a climate-friendly hydrogen industry as part of a broader strategy to decarbonize the state’s largest industries. Yet, in practice, the state’s approach has allowed projects like the one in Stockton to proceed, even when they rely on fossil fuels. While the port claims that the plant will reduce emissions by replacing diesel with hydrogen, this narrow focus overlooks the larger climate implications of how the hydrogen is produced.

          A Call for Better Solutions

As the world grapples with the urgent need to decarbonize, projects like the one in Stockton illustrate the dangers of false solutions. Investing in fossil hydrogen today risks undermining the clean energy industry of tomorrow.

As California aims for a greener future, this project presents a difficult question: Should we use “dirty” hydrogen now, hoping that cleaner alternatives will come later? Critics argue that this approach could slow progress toward truly clean energy. According to Transport & Environment, hydrogen trucks are more expensive than electric ones, and so is the cost of fuel. The tenants at the Port of Stockton should consider all the costs associated with hydrogen—from financial implications to human health.

The hydrogen plant at the Port of Stockton is a cautionary tale of what can happen when we gamble on false solutions. The path forward is clear: we must invest in technologies that reduce emissions both now and in the future, rather than those that trade one form of pollution for another. By demanding better solutions, we can build a cleaner, healthier world for all.

As Southern California grapples with a wildfire season that seems to intensify each year, it’s crucial to ask: what’s driving these catastrophic fires? While the media often focuses on natural causes like lightning strikes or human negligence, there’s a larger, more insidious force behind the growing wildfire threat—fossil fuels.

has quantified the staggering contribution of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies to the growing severity and frequency of wildfires. Since 1986, nearly 19.8 million acres of forest in western North America have burned due to the heat-trapping emissions released by just 88 major fossil fuel producers and cement manufacturers.

Fossil Fuels and Fire Danger: The Data Speaks Volumes

It’s no coincidence that wildfires are worsening as fossil fuel emissions continue to rise. Emissions from companies like Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell have contributed to nearly half of the observed increase in fire-danger conditions across the region since 1901. These emissions have significantly dried out vegetation, making it far more susceptible to ignition.

In Southern California, where more than 100,000 acres have burned in recent weeks, the link between climate change and wildfires is undeniable. According to experts, a combination of increased temperatures, prolonged droughts, and excessive vegetation growth from previous wet seasons has created a perfect storm for large-scale fires. Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at UCLA, warned that the worst is yet to come, as fall winds—combined with the impacts of climate change—will likely drive more devastating blazes.

In the face of these increasingly dangerous fire conditions, fossil fuel companies have spent decades pushing false solutions, claiming they are reducing their environmental impact. However, these claims often fall short, doing little or nothing to address the root causes of the problem. For example, some companies have touted

          It’s time to demand

          better solutions

. We must stop relying on half-hearted measures that continue to allow the fossil fuel industry to profit at the expense of people and our planet. Instead, we need bold action, including holding these companies accountable for the role they play in fueling climate disasters like wildfires.

It’s not just about identifying the problem—it’s about taking responsibility. As communities around the world increasingly turn to the courts to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in climate change, the evidence supporting these lawsuits is growing stronger by the day. Fossil fuel giants have long known about the destructive impact of their dirty products on the environment. Yet, instead of changing course, they have doubled down on disinformation campaigns and have successfully blocked meaningful climate policies.

Now, the people most affected by these disasters—especially low-income communities and marginalized populations—are calling for justice. They are demanding that fossil fuel companies pay their fair share for climate-related damages, from firefighting efforts to rebuilding communities after devastating wildfires.

Better Solutions: Local Solar for a Resilient Future

As we face the mounting dangers of wildfires and extreme weather, it’s clear that traditional energy systems are no longer adequate. What we need are better solutions, like local solar, to protect our communities and enable us to thrive in a changing climate. Local solar energy offers a sustainable, decentralized approach that not only reduces our reliance on fossil fuels but also strengthens our resilience to extreme weather events, including wildfires and heat waves.

Local solar systems generate power right where it’s needed—whether on rooftops or through community microgrids. This flexibility is vital during wildfire seasons when traditional power lines can be both vulnerable and a source of ignition. As wildfires ravage Southern California, with the threat of more to come, local solar ensures communities can maintain power even when centralized grids fail. Independent solar-powered systems can keep essential services running, support firefighting efforts, and reduce the overall risk of fires by minimizing reliance on long-distance power lines.

But the benefits of local solar extend beyond resilience to wildfires. In times of extreme heat, solar-powered cooling systems and battery storage can help families stay safe during heat waves, preventing dangerous blackouts and reducing energy costs. Communities that adopt local solar solutions can protect their most vulnerable members—low-income families and seniors—by ensuring access to energy even during critical times.

In the face of worsening wildfires and heat waves, better solutions like local solar are the key to creating a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable future.

A Call to Action: Real Solutions for a Burning Planet

We are at a critical juncture. As Southern California braces for an even more dangerous fire season, the need for real, effective solutions has never been clearer. Governor Gavin Newsom has already secured federal support to assist with fire suppression efforts, but these measures are reactive. To truly address the wildfire crisis, we need proactive, long-term solutions that focus on reducing emissions and building resilience to climate impacts.

It’s time for all of us—policymakers, corporations, and everyday residents —to reject the false solutions being offered by the fossil fuel industry. We must advocate for

          better solutions

that not only reduce emissions but also protect vulnerable communities from the worst impacts of climate change. Only by working together can we create a future where wildfires is not a regular catastrophe, but a manageable and natural part of our ecosystem.

Let’s hold the real culprits accountable and demand the solutions we all deserve. Together, we can build a safer, more sustainable future for all.
